Shashi Tharoor again in controversy for criticizing Indira Gandhi

Shashi Tharoor, a Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, has once again come into the limelight. He has once again brought himself to the forefront of the controversy by writing articles in various newspapers in the country criticizing the Emergency during the Congress regime. Without naming Tharoor, Congress Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha, Manickam Tagore, sarcastically said that when a colleague speaks exactly like the BJP, it seems that the bird is no longer a bird. It has become a parrot.

However, no one in the top leadership of the Congress has commented on this. Neither has Priyanka Gandhi, who was elected to the Lok Sabha from Wayanad in Kerala. Priyanka only said that the article was not read. This may suggest that the Congress may not be willing to give importance to Tharoor by participating in the debate. Despite repeatedly opposing the party, the Congress has probably adopted a policy of ignoring Tharoor.

A section of the Congress central leadership is of the firm opinion that Tharoor wants the party to expel him so that he can retain his membership in the Lok Sabha. The Congress does not want to do that. Most in the party believe that Tharoor can leave the party if he wants. In that case, he will have to contest the by-elections.

In June 1975, Indira Gandhi imposed a state of emergency in the country. This June, that decision turned 50 years old. On this occasion, the BJP took several programs across the country. They also thought of calling a special session of Parliament to condemn the imposition of the emergency. But after the Pahalgam incident and Operation Sindoor, the government canceled that plan, as the opposition was pressuring the government to call a special session. Several BJP leaders wrote articles in newspapers condemning the imposition of the emergency. Congress’ Shashi Tharoor also did the same. His article was published in many newspapers in the country and abroad. The article ‘Indira’s Emergency, What has India learned in 50 years’ was also published in Prakham Alo on Thursday.

Tharoor has strongly criticized Indira Gandhi and her son Sanjay Gandhi for imposing the emergency. He wrote that all four pillars of democracy were attacked. The judiciary succumbed to immense pressure. Even the Supreme Court legitimized the decision to take away people’s fundamental rights. He wrote that suppressing the opposition, extrajudicial killings, and taking away the rights of the common man were routine. Shashi explained in his article how Indira Gandhi’s ‘autocratic mentality’ had a negative impact on the lives of the common man. He wrote that the Emergency changed the face of the country. Journalists, social workers, and opposition leaders were sent to prison.
